Most of us type things into these tools we would never post anywhere. A health question at midnight. A money worry. A draft of a message to somebody we are annoyed with. All four tools keep a record of that by default, and all four hand you a different lever. Claude has a setting, ChatGPT has a mode, Copilot has a cleanup, Gemini has a timer. None of them erase anything the instant you click, and none of them cover everything, so the real limits are in each section below.

Claude: Turn off training on your chats

Claude: Turn off training on your chats

One toggle decides whether your conversations are used to train future versions of Claude.

  1. Go to claude.ai, select your name in the settings menu, and click the drop down.
  2. Select Settings, or go straight to claude.ai/settings/profile.
  3. Select Privacy, or go straight to claude.ai/settings/data-privacy-controls.
  4. Find Help Improve our AI models and click the toggle to turn it off.

When to reach for it: worth doing once, today, if you would rather your chats not feed future models. Two honest limits. Turning it off stops new chats from being used and stops Anthropic using your previously stored ones, but anything already folded into a model that finished training stays in that model. And if safety classifiers flag a conversation, it can still be used for trust and safety work regardless of this setting. This changes what happens to your chats, not whether they exist, so deleting conversations is still a separate job.

ChatGPT: Temporary Chat

ChatGPT: Temporary Chat

A conversation that stays out of your history, makes no new memories, and is not used to train the models.

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web and start a new chat.
  2. Click the pill-shaped Temporary button in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Choose whether you want personalized responses before the conversation begins. You cannot change this afterward.
  4. If it turns out to be worth keeping, save it to your history. Saving converts it into a regular chat.

When to reach for it: this is the one for the question you would rather not scroll past in your sidebar next week. A non-personalized temporary chat ignores your memories, custom instructions, and plugins. A personalized one can read your existing memories but will not create or update any. Neither is used to improve the models while it stays temporary. Two things to know: OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes, and the moment you save one it becomes a normal chat and follows your account settings from then on. It is quieter, not invisible.

Copilot: Delete your activity history

Copilot: Delete your activity history

Microsoft’s privacy dashboard holds what Copilot has logged for your personal account, and lets you read it or wipe it.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard with your personal Microsoft account.
  2. Go to Privacy, then Empower your productivity, then Copilot.
  3. Open Your Copilot app activity history, then Copilot apps.
  4. Choose Export all activity history to see it first, or Delete all activity history and confirm.

When to reach for it: good once or twice a year, or right after you have used Copilot for something you would rather not have on file. Export before you delete if you are at all curious, because reading the list is usually more instructive than clearing it. The limits: deleting sends a request to Microsoft, so it can take some time to finish rather than vanishing on the spot. Anything Copilot helped you write that you then saved into a document stays in that document. And this page covers personal Microsoft accounts only. A work or school account is managed separately, through that organization.

Gemini: Set activity to auto-delete

Gemini: Set activity to auto-delete

Rather than remembering to clean things out, you pick a window and Google clears it for you.

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Open Settings & help, then Activity.
  3. Near the top, click Choose an auto-delete option, or the line reading Deleting activity older than … months.
  4. Pick 3, 18, or 36 months, or Don’t auto-delete activity, then click Next and follow the prompts.

When to reach for it: the set-and-forget option, and the one I would do first if you only do one thing from this issue. The default is 18 months, which is a lot longer than most people assume. Dropping it to 3 means an old conversation ages out on its own instead of sitting there indefinitely. One caveat straight from Google’s page: even when Keep Activity is off, your conversations are saved with your account for up to 72 hours so the service can run and process feedback. This shortens the tail. It does not make anything instant.

Try this

Before you change a single setting, open the privacy or activity page of whichever tool you use most and just read it. Scroll back. Most people are surprised by how far it goes, and that surprise is more useful than any toggle. Then change exactly one thing this week: the Gemini auto-delete window, or the Claude training toggle. One is plenty.
