Most of us have months of old chats saved across these tools. Some are harmless. Some hold a draft of a hard email, a budget, or a question about a health worry. Each tool has its own way to clear them out, and deleting a chat does not always remove everything connected to it, so I note what stays behind for each one. A standing reminder too: AI can sound sure and still be wrong, so check anything about money, health, or safety against a real source, and keep private details out of any tool you do not fully trust.
Claude: delete Several Chats at Once

Instead of deleting chats one by one, you can select a batch and delete them together on the web.
- Open claude.ai and select “Chats and tasks” to see your full history.
- Hover over any chat, open the three-dot menu on its right, and choose “Select.”
- Check the chats you want gone, or choose “Select all.”
- Click “Delete” and confirm.
When to reach for it: when a project is finished and you want its chats out of your history. Deleted chats leave your history right away, and Anthropic says they are deleted from its back-end systems within 30 days. Your projects and account information stay until you delete them. On iPhone you press and hold a chat and tap Delete, and the page does not describe bulk delete there. It also does not say whether deleting a chat affects Claude’s memory, so check your memory settings separately.

ChatGPT: archive a Chat Instead of Deleting It

Archiving takes a chat out of your sidebar without deleting it, which is useful for chats you might want again.
- Open your chat history and select the three-dot (•••) menu next to a chat.
- Select Archive. There is no confirmation step.
- To get a chat back, open Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats (the label can read View archived chats, depending on your device).
- Select Unarchive to return it to your regular history.
When to reach for it: when you want a cleaner sidebar without losing anything. Archiving is not privacy. OpenAI says archived chats stay searchable and keep the same retention period. If you want a chat gone, choose Delete instead. OpenAI says deleting is permanent, you cannot restore a deleted chat, and it is scheduled for removal from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. Deleting a chat also does not delete files saved separately in Library. The page does not say how either option affects memory.

Copilot: delete One Conversation or Your Whole History

The free personal Copilot lets you delete a single conversation, or clear everything tied to your Microsoft account.
- On the web, open your history in the left sidebar. If you do not see it, click the sidebar icon in the upper left.
- Select the three dots next to a conversation, then select Delete. On Windows or Mac, right-click the conversation and select Delete.
- To clear everything, go to Manage your Copilot activity history on your Microsoft account and select “Delete all activity history.”
- If you signed in with an Apple ID, open the Copilot app and go to Account, then Privacy, then Clear my history.
When to reach for it: when you want one chat gone, or a clean slate. Microsoft says Copilot keeps the last 18 months of interactions in your history. A shared link can be opened by anyone who has it, and the page does not say whether deleting a conversation also removes a link you already shared, so do not count on delete to pull back something you shared. This is the free personal Copilot. Microsoft 365 Copilot at work or school has a different process through the My Account portal, and your organization may control it.

Gemini: set Your Gemini Activity to Delete Itself

Auto-delete clears your Gemini Apps Activity on a schedule, so you set it once and stop thinking about it.
- On a computer, go to gemini.google.com, then click Settings & help, then Activity.
- Near the top, click “Deleting activity older than … months” or “Choose an auto-delete option.”
- Pick 3, 18, or 36 months. Google lists 18 months as the default, and you can also choose “Don’t auto-delete activity.”
- Click Next and follow the on-screen steps.
When to reach for it: when you would rather set a rule than remember to clean up. Even with Keep Activity off, Google says your conversations are saved with your account for up to 72 hours. Deleting a shared chat does not remove its public link, and deleting a Gem conversation does not delete the Gem itself. On a work or school account, your administrator controls these settings, so you may not be able to change them.

Try this
Pick the tool you use most and open its history. Look at the five oldest chats and delete or archive anything you would not want someone to read over your shoulder. Then open that tool’s source link above and check what stays behind after you delete. It takes about five minutes, and you will know exactly what each tool keeps.
