Sometimes typing is the slow part, not the thinking. All four of these tools let you just talk instead, and the voice experience across the board just got a lot more natural, less like a walkie-talkie, more like an actual conversation. A spoken answer can still be confidently wrong, the same as a typed one, so treat anything important the same way and double-check it before you act on it.
Claude: Voice mode

Claude has a free voice mode built right into the app, so you can talk through an idea out loud instead of typing it.
- Open Claude on the web or in the mobile app and start a chat.
- On the web, tap the sound wave icon in the lower right of the chat window. On mobile, tap the voice mode icon next to the microphone in the text box.
- On mobile, pick a voice you like.
- Start talking. Claude answers out loud once it hears you pause, and you can keep going back and forth.
When to reach for it: reach for this when you want to think out loud, like talking through a decision on a walk, without stopping to type.

ChatGPT: GPT-Live

ChatGPT just rolled out a new voice model called GPT-Live that listens and talks at the same time, so it feels much less like a walkie-talkie and more like a real conversation. It is still rolling out as of July 2026, so what you see may vary a bit by device.
- Open ChatGPT in the app or at chatgpt.com.
- Tap the Voice button in the message box.
- Start talking. GPT-Live can respond mid-sentence, sit quietly while you think, and pull in a smarter model in the background for a harder question without breaking the flow.
- Tap the stop or X icon to end the conversation and return to text.
When to reach for it: reach for this for a real back-and-forth, like talking out a schedule conflict or practicing what you will say in a hard conversation, since it handles interruptions and pauses more naturally than the older voice mode did.

Copilot: Copilot Voice

The free, personal Copilot has its own voice feature, so you can talk to it the way you would call a friend for a quick answer.
- Open the Copilot app, or go to copilot.com, and find the microphone icon in the composer.
- Tap the microphone icon to start voice mode.
- Allow microphone access if it is your first time.
- Wait for Copilot’s greeting, then start talking. Tap the microphone again to mute or unmute, and tap the X to end the conversation.
When to reach for it: good for a quick spoken question when your hands are busy, like checking a fact while you cook (or hands-free while driving, where that is legal).

Gemini: Gemini Live

Gemini Live is a free, natural voice conversation mode built right into the Gemini app.
- Open the Gemini app on your phone.
- At the bottom, tap the Live button, or swipe left.
- Follow any on-screen prompts the first time.
- Start talking. You can also just say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” without opening the app first.
When to reach for it: reach for this for a longer, free-flowing conversation, like talking through travel plans out loud while you pack.

One thing to keep in mind
A spoken answer can sound confident and still be wrong, the same as a typed one. For anything that matters, like a fact, a number, or advice you plan to act on, check it before you rely on it.
