I’ve got a trip coming up and my browser looked like a crime scene: six flight tabs, four hotel tabs, and a spreadsheet nobody had touched in a week. Each tool below handles one real piece of trip planning, building the packing list, researching where to actually go, comparing flights and hotels, or turning a real decision into a report you can trust.   1. Turn it on once. Go to Settings, then Capabilities, and switch on “Code execution and file creation.” Team and Enterprise plans have it on by default.
  2. Describe what you want in plain language: “Build me an Excel packing list for a 10 day trip to Portugal, columns for item, packed, and who’s bringing it.”
  3. Claude builds the file right in the chat and gives you a download link. It works for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF.
  4. Ask for a change the same way, add a column, stretch the trip to two weeks, and Claude updates the file instead of starting over.

When to reach for it: reach for Claude when you want the plan to end up as a real file you can share or keep editing, not just a chat you’ll lose track of later.

Deep research turns a vague question into an actual researched report with citations, instead of a one paragraph guess.

  1. In a chat, open the tools (+) menu and choose “Deep research,” or type /deepresearch.
  2. Describe the real decision: “Compare three all inclusive resorts in Cancun for a family of four in March, price, reviews, and flight time from Boston.”
  3. Answer any clarifying questions so ChatGPT scopes the research correctly before it starts.
  4. Approve the research plan and let it run. It can take several minutes while it reads and compares sources.
  5. Read the final report. Every claim links back to a source, so you can check it yourself before you book anything.

When to reach for it: reach for this when you’re comparing real options and want sources you can check, not a quick guess. Usage is capped by your plan, so glance at the counter in the tools menu before you start a big one.

Researcher is a Microsoft 365 Copilot agent built for exactly this: multistep research that pulls from the web and hands you back a structured, cited report instead of a chat you have to scroll through.

  1. Sign into the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. This needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, it is not the free copilot.microsoft.com chat.
  2. In Chat, open Agents and select Researcher.
  3. Ask a real question: “I’m deciding between a week in Lisbon or a week in Porto in October, compare weather, flight cost from Boston, and walkability.”
  4. Answer any clarifying questions it asks so it knows what actually matters to you, then read the structured, cited report it hands back.

When to reach for it: reach for this when you have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and a decision worth a real report, not the two minute question the standard Copilot chat already handles.

Gemini: Search for Flights and Hotels

Gemini can pull real flight and hotel options straight from Google Flights and Google Hotels without you leaving the chat.

  1. Open the Gemini app or gemini.google.com and make sure you’re signed in with Activity turned on. This doesn’t work in Live chats.
  2. Ask in plain language: “Find flights to Lisbon from Boston the first week of October” or “Find hotels in Porto for four nights in October with free breakfast.”
  3. Narrow it down with real filters, a price ceiling, number of stops, hotel amenities, and Gemini reruns the search.
  4. Compare the options it shows, then finish the booking yourself. Gemini can’t actually book the flight or hotel for you.

When to reach for it: reach for this when you already know roughly where and when you’re going and just want real prices and options fast, not a full research report.
