Picking a gift is stressful when you don’t know what to get, or you’re worried it’ll feel generic. Here’s one way each of the four tools I use can help, from actually weighing the trade-offs to making the wrapping look like you tried. Pick the piece you need and skip the rest.
Claude: brainstorm a surprise without leaving a trace
Incognito chats in Claude don’t save to your history or memory, so you can think through a gift idea for someone who shares your account or device, and it won’t turn up later.
- Start a new chat outside any project.
- Click the ghost icon in the upper right corner to turn on incognito mode.
- Describe the person, your budget, and what you already know they like, and ask for ideas.
- Click the “x” to close the chat when you’re done. It can’t be reopened, and it never shows up in your regular history.

ChatGPT can generate an image from a plain description, so instead of grabbing whatever’s at the store, you can make a one-off gift tag, wrapping pattern, or card.
- Open a chat and describe the image you want, like “a watercolor gift tag with a small dog on it.”
- Or tap the More menu and choose Images to start from the image tool directly.
- Ask for a change in plain language if it’s not right yet, like “make the background lighter.”
- Download the image and print it yourself, or send it to a local print shop.
When to reach for it: reach for this when a small personal touch, a custom tag or a one-of-a-kind card, matters more than speed. Edits don’t always stay inside the exact area you point to, so plan on regenerating once or twice. Available on every ChatGPT plan, including the free one.

Copilot: get a reasoned shortlist, not just a list
Think Deeper is a Copilot mode built for questions with real trade-offs, like weighing a budget against what someone actually wants, and it shows its reasoning while it works through the answer.
- At copilot.microsoft.com or in the app, type what you’re looking for, including your budget and what you know about the person’s taste.
- Tap “Quick response” underneath your prompt.
- Select “Think Deeper” from the mode list before you send it.
- Ask follow-up questions. Think Deeper stays on for the rest of the conversation until you switch it off.
When to reach for it: reach for this when you’re stuck between two or three options and want Copilot to actually weigh them against each other, not just list them. It’s free and unlimited on the consumer Copilot, with priority access for Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers if it’s busy. It can take up to about 10 seconds to answer.

Gemini: turn a photo you already have into the gift
Gemini can edit a photo you upload, not just make a new one from scratch, so a favorite snapshot can become the mock-up for a canvas print, an ornament, or a printed card.
- Go to gemini.google.com, open your Library, or upload the photo you want to use.
- Select the photo, then choose Chat underneath it.
- Describe the edit, like “put this photo on a canvas print” or “turn this into a holiday ornament design.”
- Review the result and ask for another pass if it’s not quite right.
When to reach for it: reach for this when you already have the photo and want to turn it into something, rather than starting from a blank prompt. Editing a photo requires you to be 18 or older on your Google account, and availability depends on your country and language.
